How serious was the Berlin Blockade?

How serious was the Berlin Blockade?
Historians debate how serious the events of the Berlin blockade were.
Why was the Berlin Blockade serious?
Historians give 4 main arguments why the Berlin blockade was serious.
  • By cutting the supplies and inflicting great hardship on the people of West Berlin Stalin was committing an act of war.
  • Stalin's aim to force the allies out of West Berlin would have made a considerable difference to the balance of power.
  • If West Berlin had turned Communist, there were fears that the rest of Germany would follow.
  • If the West used force to retaliate, it could have escalated into a full scale nuclear war.
Why was the Berlin Blockade not serious?
Historians give 3 main arguments why the Berlin blockade was not serious.
  • Stalin did not succeed in forcing the allies out of West Berlin, which meant the balance of power remained more equal.
  • Neither side wanted the situation to escalate into a hot war. Stalin's aim was simply to stop the separate development of the German zones.
  • Stalin didn't shoot at the planes flying in to drop supplies, and the US did not use force to destroy the blockade.
