How was Stalin as a war leader?
Stalin was seen by the people as a good leader during the war:
How was he as a leader after the war?
The years between 1945 and 1953 were the era of 'high Stalinism', in which Stalin focussed on rebuilding the USSR after the devastation of the Second World War. But by 1949, Stalin was becoming weak. His authority was coming under threat from a new generation of Communist party members, including Beria and Malenkov.
How did he purge Beria's allies?
The Mingrelian Affair (1951) was a purge of the Georgian Communist party, which targeted Beria's allies. Stalin then reshuffled the Politburo in 1952, which allowed him to isolate Malenkov and Beria and promote younger politicians who were loyal to him.
