What happened at the Somme?
The British attacked the Germans at the River Somme in 1916.
When was the Battle of the Somme?
The Battle of the Somme started on the 1st July 1916 and ended in November that year.
How many BEF died in the Battle of the Somme?
In the first day over 20,000 men died and 57,000 were wounded. By the end of the Battle it is estimated that deaths and casulties for the British was over 400,000.
Why is the Battle of the Somme significant?
Two new strategies were used in this battle by the British.
  • The creeping barrage: artillary shelled the German lines just ahead of the British troops as they moved forward.
  • Tanks were put to significant use for the first time in this battle, although they were still problematic and unreliable.
