Drug Crime in the 20th Century

What is drug crime?
The use of drugs has increasingly become a criminal offence as more substances have been made illegal.
What are the arguments for legalising drugs and stopping the use of them being a crime?
Many argue taking a drug should be a personal choice as long as it doesn't harm others, or that legalising certain drugs like marijuana would help in tackling other crimes such as gang-related violence.
When did drugs become a crime?
Many drugs first became illegal in 1971 when the Misuse of Drugs Act was passed.
How do the police deal with drug crime?
In the late 1970s drug squads were set up to stop the use and spread of illegal drugs. They raided buildings and disrupted the drugs trade, something that still happens today.
