What was Diem's government like in South Vietnam?
In 1954 Ngo Dinh Diem became the Prime Minister of a US backed government of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). Many reports suggest Diem's government used violence and nepotism to rule the country.
Why was Diem's government chosen by the USA to govern South Vietnam?
Diem was anti-communist, he had spent alot of time and studied in America and the US thought they could control him. When he was in America Diem met with future President John F. Kennedy who suggested he would make a good leader. America believed he was the best chance to contain communism to North Vietnam.
