Who were the Suffragists?
The National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) were peaceful campaigners known as suffragists.

They were led by Millicent Fawcett.
What tactics did the Suffragists use?
They used peaceful tactics such as writing letters to MPs, petitions and holding marches.
What did the Suffragists do?
In 1907 they organised a march of 3,000 women in London. It was known as the 'Mud March' because of the rain and mud.
When were the Suffragists founded?
They were founded in 1897.
What was the significance of the Suffragists?
The suffragists were significant for three key reasons:
  • They helped women win the vote in 1918 by persuading politicians and the public.
  • They inspired other campaigns, such as for women to have equal pay in 1970.
  • They inspired further rights for women such as the Abortion Act 1967 and the Divorce Act 1969.
