The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was committed to fighting for civil rights in the courts in order to bring an end to segregation.
When was the NAACP set up?
The NAACP was set up in February 1909.
Why was the NAACP created?
The NAACP was set up for 2 main reasons:
  • To end the discrimination and violence faced by African Americans.
  • To end lynchings of African Americans.
What events was the NAACP involved in?
The NAACP was involved in 5 key events between the 1940s and 1970s:
  • It was involved in challenging segregation in education in the Brown versus Topeka case in 1954.
  • It helped protect the witnesses in the Emmett Till case in 1955.
  • It was one of the organisers of the March on Washington in 1963.
  • It was involved in Freedom Summer of 1964.
  • It campaigned for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
