Hungary is a landlocked country in central Europe.
When did Hungary become a satellite state?
Soviet control was established over Hungary in 1948.
How did Hungary become a satellite state?
Hungary became a satellite state through 6 key events:
  • Hungary had an agricultural-based economy and little support for the communists. It was a German ally in the Second World War.
  • Soviet troops remained in the country after liberation.
  • In November 1945, elections gave communists 17% of the vote but they were given control of the Ministry of the Interior.
  • They used secret police to control and intimidate opposition politicians.
  • In 1947 rigged elections gave the communists control of the coalition government.
  • The Social Democratic Party and Communist Party merged in 1948, giving the communists control of Hungary.
