Hungary became a satellite state through 6 key events:

• ❖ Hungary had an agricultural-based economy and little support for the communists. It was a German ally in the Second World War.
• ❖ Soviet troops remained in the country after liberation.
• ❖ In November 1945, elections gave communists 17% of the vote but they were given control of the Ministry of the Interior.
• ❖ They used secret police to control and intimidate opposition politicians.
• ❖ In 1947 rigged elections gave the communists control of the coalition government.
• ❖ The Social Democratic Party and Communist Party merged in 1948, giving the communists control of Hungary.
