Who was Chiang Kai-shek?
Chiang Kai-shek was a Chinese nationalist, politician and general. He led the Guomindang (GMD), often referred to as the Chinese Nationalist Party, and was leader of the Republic of China until his defeat in the Chinese Civil War.
When did Chiang Kai-shek live?
Chiang was born in 1887 and died in 1975. He ruled mainland China from 1928 until 1949, and Taiwan from 1949 until his death.

Chiang was born in Xikou, China.
What was Chiang Kai-shek's role?
Chiang played 3 key roles during his life:
  • He was one of the founding figures of the Chinese Nationalist Party (GMD).
  • By the mid 1920s, he had consolidated power and became ruler of the Republic of China in 1928.
  • He waged war on the CCP and Japan, before being defeated by the CCP in 1949. He fled China for Taiwan where he was president until his death in 1975.
