Bulgaria became a satellite state through 5 key events:
  • Before the Second World War, Bulgaria was a monarchy with strong links to Russia. However, during the war it was allied with Germany.
  • Soviet troops remained there after the war.
  • The communists joined the Fatherland Front, a coalition government with other parties. However, they then purged it of other political groups.
  • The monarchy was abolished in 1946.
  • In 1947 a new constitution destroyed democracy and outlawed opposition parties.
