Admiral Jellicoe was the most important British naval commander during the First World War:
  • He was the commander of the British Grand Fleet that defended Britain from the German High Seas Fleet.
  • He commanded the British Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland in May 1916.
  • Admiral Jellicoe was sacked in 1917 for disagreeing with the tactic of using convoys to combat the threat of U-boats.
What was the significance of Admiral Jellicoe?
Admiral Jellicoe was significant for 2 reasons:
  • He forced the German High Seas Fleet to remain in harbour during the war.
  • Winston Churchill said that Admiral Jellicoe was 'the only man on either side who could lose the war in an afternoon' - meaning that to lose the Battle of Jutland would mean a British defeat in the war.
